Extreme Fatigue

General
What the internet says

Cancer. Lupus. Multiple sclerosis. Leukemia. Chronic Lyme disease. Heart failure.

What it probably actually is

Not sleeping enough (or sleeping badly). Stress — chronic stress is physically exhausting. Dehydration. Too much screen time. Iron deficiency anemia (very common in women). Vitamin D or B12 deficiency. Thyroid issues (easily tested). Depression. Simply doing too much.

🧠 The full picture

Fatigue is the #1 reason people see a doctor in the US. It also has about 200 possible causes, most of which are benign and addressable. The scary stuff (cancer, autoimmune disease) usually comes with other symptoms. Pure fatigue without anything else is almost always lifestyle or deficiency related.

⚠️ When to actually call your doctor

These are real red flags. If any of these apply, don't wait.

  • Accompanied by unexplained weight loss
  • Night sweats soaking your sheets
  • Fever that won't go away
  • Swollen lymph nodes in neck, armpit, or groin
  • Been going on for more than 6 weeks with no improvement
  • Fatigue so severe you can't perform basic daily tasks
