Constipation

General
What the internet says

Colorectal cancer. Hypothyroidism. Hirschsprung disease. Parkinson's.

What it probably actually is

Not enough fiber. Not enough water. Sitting most of the day. Travel messing with your routine. Stress. Iron supplements. Pain medications, especially opioids. Ignoring the urge to go.

🧠 The full picture

Normal bowel frequency is anything from 3 times a day to 3 times a week. "I haven't gone in 2 days" is not constipation for most people. True constipation is straining, hard stools, and incomplete evacuation. Diet and hydration fix the overwhelming majority of cases.

⚠️ When to actually call your doctor

These are real red flags. If any of these apply, don't wait.

  • Sudden change in bowel habits lasting more than 3-4 weeks (especially over age 50)
  • Blood in stool or on toilet paper
  • Pencil-thin stools that persist
  • Abdominal pain with constipation
  • Unexplained weight loss alongside changes
